MPS Drives High ROI in Automotive, Education and Everything in Between

Guest post by Mike Feldman, President, Large Enterprise Operations, Xerox

Our customers’ successes are our successes, and saving them time and money, and increasing efficiency remains top of mind when implementing new solutions or service contracts.

I was recently invited to attend FCA US LLC’s sixth annual Qualitas awards ceremony – a program that recognizes FCA US suppliers that have shown extraordinary commitment in key areas such as quality, innovation, continuous improvement and commitment to FCA US’s foundational principles. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, FCA US is a member of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV family of companies.

The company awarded us with their Services Quality Supplier of the Year award, recognizing Xerox for success through teamwork, innovation and an intense focus on quality.

In 2015, our team worked with FCA US, the seventh-largest automaker in the world, to help them bring a more consistent level of service to all of its 53 locations in the United States, Mexico and Canada, including office and manufacturing plants. Following an extensive assessment of business practices that included taking a closer look at the company’s printing practices, document security, productivity and sustainability, we implemented a global managed print services (MPS) solution that is tailored to the automotive maker’s unique business processes.

As part of the solution, Xerox is helping FCA US better manage printing and automating manual processes. We are responsible for all printer deployment for devices including fleet printing, wide format printers, production color and mono printers, ePublishing and digital storefront, within the headquarters, plants and training and business centers. Additionally, Xerox is in charge of mapping FCA US’s facilities, supplies and toner replenishment, and printer maintenance for more than 10,000 printers globally.

By utilizing Xerox’s “Follow me Print” software to allow end users the ability to only print when and where they really need to, Xerox has cut printing costs, improved document security and enhanced sustainability at FCA US. With this implementation, we’ve been able to leverage FCA US’s combined print volume to drive quality and increase efficiency, which reduced FCA US’s print costs by 7.4 percent annually.

While our expertise for the automotive industry runs deep, we’ve also applied this same skillful innovation and dedicated teamwork for companies across various industries on a global scale.

Powering the Largest City in the U.S.

With more than 8 million residents, the City of New York is the most populated city in the United States. Dozens of agencies keep the City’s five boroughs running, providing everything from police and fire services, to health clinics, to parks and recreation. Those agencies use thousands of print devices to help them get their work accomplished.

To transition to a centralized, managed environment that consolidates devices, save taxpayer dollars and bring transparency into its operations, the City of New York turned to Xerox Managed Print Services. The project has only begun and it is already saving participating agencies an average of more than 49 percent in printing costs.

Additional results include:

  • $2 million in total annual print savings to date
  • More than 51 percent reduction in print equipment to date, with more than 2,200 devices currently under management
  • Participating agencies have seen an average of 70 percent reduction in energy use, 68 percent decrease in solid waste, 71 percent decrease in greenhouse gases
  • Virtually no equipment failure or downtime, with an average equipment user uptime of 99.8 percent

Delivering Efficiency to K-12 Education

Combined, the New Haven Public Schools and the City of New Haven had more than 1,000 single-function personal printers, laser printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines which were difficult to manage and costly to maintain.

Xerox helped the City of New Haven and the Board of Education replace hundreds of inefficient legacy devices with energy-efficient multifunction devices for scanning, printing, faxing and email, along with two on-site print centers. We’re helping New Haven achieve significant cost reductions and increasing efficiency, while freeing IT staff from servicing printers.

In addition, New Haven reported projected savings of approximately $3.5 million over five years, and decreased energy output and reduced paper use by 50 percent.

Set the Stage for Savings, Efficiency, Security and More

While cost is often the main driver for exploring MPS, its value can touch many other areas of your enterprise.

Print management typically delivers benefits that help organizations:

  • Add more print security, control and reporting without disrupting IT infrastructure
  • Improve control over print use and costs to drive more savings and meet sustainability goals
  • Authenticate users for secure printing anywhere without putting information/data at risk
  • Automate data gathering and management to minimize IT burden
  • Lay the groundwork for ongoing process improvement with fact-based data
  • Guide user behavior changes to use print resources more efficiently
  • Put print governance in place to support compliance
  • Enhance the mobile use experience by enabling print from any to device to any device, securely

From automotive to government to education, Xerox MPS solutions are helping our customers increase efficiencies in crowded, paper- and data-heavy environments while also keeping costs low with savings upwards of millions of dollars.
